Despite their dependable nature, Volkswagens do have some common problems that we regularly see. It’s not unusual for Jettas that are newer than 2013 to experience a malfunction with the check engine light. Generally, this occurs in low-mileage vehicles. Often the culprit is a sensor or software problem, but we always recommend having it checked out as soon as possible to make sure it’s not a more serious issue. Early 2000 models Passats can begin to have trouble with oil sludge collecting in the engine around 70,000 to 90,000 miles. This can cause potentially cause engine failure – so it’s essential to make sure you stay on top of your maintenance with regular oil changes.

In 2006 Jettas, we’ve seen a couple of other common issues, such as wiring harness shorts and problems with the airbag malfunction light. Both of these commonly start around 100,000 miles. Another type of Volkswagen repair that we often see, particularly in 2004 Passats. Incessant rattling is another problem often reported by VW drivers. It’s particularly noticeable when driving over bumps and can sound like it’s coming from the rear or the center of the vehicle. In most cases, this tends to be caused by loose muffler brackets or rear spring failure, although it can be caused by other issues as well.
