Your Blades, Your Car, Your Choice
When you turn on the wipers, is your windshield streaked or hazy? Do you hear clattering or whining? Is the rubber split? Are the edges worn or torn? If you notice anything aside from a clean, quiet slide across your glass, it’s way past time to replace them.
Streaks and noise mean you have reduced visibility, which could decrease your ability to see dangerous road conditions in time to stop or turn. Night driving can be even worse. Along with not being able to see the road, the glare of oncoming headlights can further distort and impair your vision.
Here in Seattle, we get our fair share of rain. Because of this, we suggest replacing your blades every 6 months or 6,000 miles. This is just a guesstimate, though. In addition to rainfall, your wiper blades are also exposed to sunlight, ozone, soap, and extreme hot and cold temperatures which can lead to deterioration. Bugs and road grime can wear them down more quickly, too. Using your blades when they are torn can even scratch your windshield. Why risk windshield replacement over the cost of new wiper blades?
Let’s Talk Wiper Blade Upgrades
Traditional black rubber blades do a great job of clearing your windshield when they are new. Unfortunately, the material breaks down quickly. Silicone blades are more expensive but last longer and perform better. Some blades have a single wiping edge. Others have multiple edges like a multi-blade razor, maximizing wiping power during both swipes of the blade.
The frame is also critical. This is the structure that applies pressure on the blade as it passes over the windshield. A conventional frame has four to six contact points that apply pressure across the blade. A beam frame provides uniform pressure along the entire surface of the wiper. It catches the wind passing over the vehicle to provide additional downforce, giving you a clean swipe. Hybrid frames have four to six contact points and an airfoil that increases downforce.
So Which Blade is Right For You?
When we replace your blades, we’ll always give you, at minimum, blades equal to those that came with your vehicle from the factory. You can also upgrade to better performing, longer-lasting blades. The extra cost of premium blades can pay off because they are safer and you won’t have to change them as often.
If you bring your car in for regular maintenance, we can keep a close eye on this and all the systems in your car. This includes making sure your windshield washer fluid reservoir is full, that you have a winter formulation for when temps drop below freezing, and that your washer nozzles are working well.
