The Audi RS6 Crosses Over the Ocean, Finally!

Audi RS6 Crosses Over The Ocean

Move over crossover. The Audi RS6 Avant, a powerful, sleek wagon, is hurtling toward the U.S. market.

After a couple of decades as a high-performance option for European drivers, this Audi wagon is jumping the pond and landing on our shores. It has all of Audi’s technological and style advancements and enhancements, but most importantly, it has some serious get-up-and-go.

Its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 pumps out about 590 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. You will be launched (literally, since to get here this fast you’ll have to use the launch-control feature) from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds. That is startlingly fast considering the car is no lightweight, tipping the scales at over 4,500 pounds. If you purchase the Dynamic Plus package your top speed is 190 mph, though 155 mph in base mode is plenty to get your blood pumping. The eight-speed automatic is smooth when you’re driving city streets, but gets burly the moment you stomp on the pedal.

The high-tech RS6 Avant is loaded with high-end ride and handling systems. The standard adaptive air suspension and all-wheel steering systems live up to their billing. The air suspension has been stiffened considerably with a big increase in its damper tautness at a baseline level. That doesn’t make the ride harsher, however. In Comfort mode, the RS6 Avant soaks up road imperfections. It also automatically adjusts the ride height up 0.8 inch when encountering rough pavement and self-levels and lowers 0.4 inch at speeds above 74 mph.

Other Features

Another cool feature is the ability to preprogram multiple vehicle functions, such as engine and transmission management, steering, suspension, all-wheel steering, Quattro sport differential, and engine sound, to your own liking. After dialing in your settings, you can drive it at exactly your preference with the push of the RS button, similar in function to the BMW M buttons on the new M generation cars.

The RS also features a rear-steer system. The rear wheels either track the fronts at high speed to improve stability or get out of phase a few degrees at lesser speeds to lower the turning radius. “Dynamic” all-wheel steering takes you to the next level by allowing the steering angle of the front and rear wheels to be adjusted independently. Adding in the optional Quattro sport differential gives you a handling package that can handle just about anything you can throw at it.

All of this ain’t cheap. The RS6 will set you back about $110,000 for the base model and moves up steeply for options. But that’s just what it costs for a vehicle that packs so much performance, technology, and comfort into a wagon that gives every U.S. crossover a run for its money.
