How to Prolong the Life of Your Transmission

How to Prolong the Life of Your Transmission

Transmissions are heavy-duty pieces of equipment that are designed to last a long time. But like any other component in your vehicle, they can wear out and eventually need repair. Transmission repairs and replacements can be costly—fortunately, there are several things you can do to help extend the life of your transmission and potentially prevent expensive repair bills.

3 Tips for Extending the Life of Your Transmission

When it comes to keeping your transmission in great shape, there are two primary factors: how well you keep it maintained and the way you drive.

  1. Make Sure Your Transmission Always Has Enough Fluid

Transmission fluid cools and lubricates the engine; when the fluid is too low, your transmission will run hotter and wear out sooner. Transmission fluid also provides the pressure needed to transfer power from the engine to the transmission, so if there’s not enough fluid, your transmission won’t shift properly.

Have your transmission fluid checked regularly at every oil change and topped off as needed. If you see any transmission fluid (it will be a reddish color) under your car, have it inspected for leaks as soon as possible. You could have a hose, gasket, or seal that needs to be replaced.

  • Transmission Service

Have your transmission fluid replaced on a schedule. As your transmission is operating and the gears grind on each other, it causes small pieces of metal to flake off into the transmission fluid. The more metal flakes are present in the fluid, the faster the transmission’s parts will wear out.

Transmission fluid also contains detergents and other additives that are designed to protect your transmission, but these get depleted over time—which means the old fluid doesn’t offer as much protection as new fluid. Check your owner’s manual for the transmission service intervals for your vehicle, or talk to one of our service advisors.

  • Avoid Excess Strain on Your Transmission

In addition to maintenance, it’s important to avoid adding unnecessary strain to your transmission. Make sure you’re using the proper gear while driving (especially if you drive a manual vehicle) and come to a complete stop before shifting between drive and reverse. Don’t haul anything heavier than the manufacturer’s towing and weight limit recommendations because this will overwork your transmission.
