Change is Ahead for the Mini Countryman

Real or fictional, espionage usually means going undercover to get the goods on the bad guys in service of the good guys. But auto spies have a more benign job. They look for clues in where the industry and carmakers are headed. In this case, they have uncovered upcoming updates to the Mini Countryman.

Insiders suggest these changes are coming soon, perhaps as early as the 2021 model year.  Though these changes will be somewhat minimal, MINI fans will be sure to get excited about the new Union Jack-style graphic for the taillights and a more streamlined Mini logo.

An updated infotainment system will have a standard 6.5-inch display (an 8.8-inch screen option is also available), wireless charging pad, and greater connectivity options. There might also be a wider selection of trim options.

Our informants don’t expect any changes to the powertrains since the engine was just updated for the 2020 model year. The 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-3 delivers 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque—with overboost, it improves to169 lb-ft. The Cooper S sports a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 with 189 hp and 206 lb-ft (221 lb-ft with overboost). The 2.0-liter version pumped out 301 horsepower, a sizable increase from 228 hp of pre-2020 models. This reduced 0-62 mph time to 5.1 seconds, getting you there 1.5 seconds faster than before. You also have the option to choose between 3 types of gearbox: 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, and 8-speed automatic.

The current Countryman has been on the market since 2017, making it a prime candidate for an update. The reveal is scheduled for the second half of next year, with market introduction coming quickly after. This is part of the “Life Cycle Impulse” update already given to the Clubman.
