Auto Mold Removal

Once moisture gets into the interior of your car, if it doesn’t have a chance to dry out, it will eventually cause mold or mildew to grow.  While you may not see the mold (unless you’re looking for it), you will probably smell it.  Mildew smell can sometimes be temporarily masked using an air freshener, but it won’t work for long.  The only solution is to get rid of the mold that is growing inside your car.  Seattle VW service visitors can read our steps here for removing mold from the interior of your car:

  • Work in a well ventilated, dry area.
  • Locate where the mold or mildew is growing.  Check the flooring such as your car mats and carpet as this is often a source of mildew.  Also, check in your trunk and around your spare tire.  Your air conditioning unit is another possible source of mildew, so inspect that as well.
  • Remove your floor mats and carpets.  Remove your air filter in your a/c unit.  Using a clean, dry cloth, wipe down any moisture.
  • Then, using equal parts white vinegar and water, spray mats and any affected areas.  Let this sit for 10-15 minutes.  Then wipe or scrub off the mold, making sure you’ve completely removed the mold.
  • Completely dry your car mats, carpets and interior.  Leave any matting outside in the sun to dry for a few hours if possible.  In places like under seats or inside your trunk, you can use a hair dryer to dry out the carpet.
  • Sprinkle baking soda on flooring and mats, leave for an hour or two, then vacuum and replace your floor mats.
