If you’ve skidded on a slippery street here in Seattle in your Mini Cooper, you know how nerve wracking that can be. 

To avoid an accident and a trip to your auto repair shop, here are 3 tips on how to get your car back under control in a skid:

1. If you find yourself in a skid, remember to steer in the direction of the skid.  This may seem counter-intuitive, but its the best way to regain your control.  Be careful to not overcorrect.  
2. Take your foot off the gas.  If your car does not have anti-lock brakes, do not use your brakes.  If your car has anti-lock brakes, step on your brake firmly.  
3. Avoid future skids by remembering to slow down on wet or icy roads.
